When you’re exfoliating correctly, it can work wonders. Smooth, radiant skin is the goal. But, it’s easy for exfoliation to go south. You could be creating short and long term damage if you aren’t careful. Most people benefit from exfoliating 1-3 times weekly. This also depends on the type of exfoliant. There are chemical and physical exfoliants, but that’s another whole post.
Some exfoliants are way more abrasive than what’s needed to effectively remove dead skin cells. The St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub is a classic example of this. Many of us grew up using it. The walnut shell powder in the formula acts in a similar way to sandpaper on your skin. It creates microscopic tears in the skin, allowing for bacteria to penetrate on an even deeper level. This can cause premature aging and acne. You want to use light pressure when exfoliating. Just let the weight of your fingertips do the work.
My recent favorite is the Elemis Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator. My skin can be pretty sensitive and this stuff leaves it feeling calm, smooth and nourished. My skin feels really hydrated afterward, which can be hard to find in an exfoliator. It’s a physical exfoliator, meaning it has little blackcurrant scrub particles.
I love reading skincare ingredient labels, so here are the ingredients: Glycerin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Octyldodecanol, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Fruit, Ethylhexyl Olivate, Phenoxyethanol, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Oil, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Seed Oil, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Aqua/Water/Eau, Fragrance (Parfum), Polyglyceryl-4 Olivate, Benzoic Acid, Nigella Sativa Seed Oil, Betula Alba Juice, Dehydroacetic Acid, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Camellia Sinensis Seed Oil, Candida Bombicola/Glucose/Methyl Rapeseedate Ferment, Propylene Glycol, Linalool, Vaccinium Myrtillus (Nordic Bilberry) Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Black Tea) Leaf Extract, Chlorphenesin, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Bud Oil.
